Report: Volkswagen Up gets new automated sequential manual for better efficiency
Although the Volkswagen Up is not for the US, those who are interested and able to get the Wolfsburg automaker’s city car should know that it will be coming with an all-new, more efficient gearbox option. Volkswagen calls it their Automated Sequential Gearbox or ASG, which will cost the UK buyer £595.

The ASG is essentially an automated version of the Up’s regular manual five-speed cog swapper and will be available on both three- and five-door versions of the Move Up and High Up…uhm, Up variants. Though because it’s automated, the transmission’s computer works in tandem with the stability control and ECU, which then tells the transmission which gear is the most optimal for the current road conditions. Unfortunately, there are no steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters.
The new ASG box for the Up allows for an increase of average fuel economy by 1.4 mpg, for a average total of 64.2 mpg while CO2 emissions drop 2g/km to 103g/km. The Volkswagen Up ASG is now available for order and deliveries are expected to begin in October of this year.
