Toyota expands its lead over GM and VW in first half of 2012

Toyota is back – and back with a vengeance. The Japanese automaker, which is still rebidding from last year’s natural disasters in Japan, sold the most cars and trucks worldwide during the first half of 2012. The move pushes Toyota’s lead over GM and Volkswagen Group.

Toyota sold a total of 4.97 million units during the first half of 2012 while GM sold 4.67 million and Volkswagen sold 4.45 million during the same period.

The increasing sales will allow Toyota to reclaim the title of the world’s largest automaker from GM and push its lead further from Volkswagen.

Toyota took the world’s largest automaker by sales in 2008 from GM when the company was forced into bankruptcy.
