Report: Cadillac green lights large luxury sedan to take on Germans

Can’t say we didn’t already see this coming, but new reports state that General Motors has green-lighted the development of a new large flagship Cadillac sedan that will compete with the likes of the BMW 7 Series, Audi A8 and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

Doesn’t the Cadillac XTS already serve that function you ask? No, it doesn’t . To break it down for you guys, the Cadillac ATS competes with the BMW 3 Series, the next CTS will grow in size to compete with the BMW 5 Series and the Cadillac XTS is just a random filler between the CTS and the upcoming large luxury sedan.

The unnamed model will be built on the rear-wheel-drive Omega platform and should hit streets by 2015.

Design cues will come from the Cadillac Ciel Concept that debuted last year at the Beach Concours d’Elegance in August 2011. Power is likely to come from a 3.6 liter V6 and a V8 option. An 8 speed transmission will be mated to the engine and all-wheel-drive will be available as an option.
