It seems Mazda’s Ford Escape-based Tribute SUVs are under some scrutiny for some “risk of sudden acceleration,” though not because of improperly seated floor mats. According to AutomotiveNews, The Center for Auto Safety called upon the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration via a petition for an investigation of 85,000 Mazda Tributes because of faulty repairs on cruise control cables.
This almost comes to no surprise as the Ford Escape SUV, which the Mazda is based off of, is also under investigation for the same issue. Specifically, the petition said that in the event that the [Tributes’] cruise control cables were damaged, they could get jammed against a ridge in the engine cover, causing sudden unintended acceleration.
In a public statement, Ford said that they are investigating the issue, though no conclusions were made. According to the NHTSA, 55 complaints were filed on 2002-2004 Mazda Tributes.
Stay tuned for more information as the investigation carries on.
