Mercedes-Benz debuts new inflatable rear seatbelts

Beltbag

Whenever anyone wanted to get an idea about what new innovative technologies will be in cars in the coming years, all they had to do was look at the latest and greatest Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Though, Mercedes-Benz weren’t the first when it comes to their latest touted feature, as Ford was first with their latest Explorer and the second was Lexus with the LFA.

Mercedes-Benz debuted what is essentially a seatbelt with a built-in airbag, or in their terms, a “Beltbag.” It was one of the most noted highlights on their ESF Experimental Safety Vehicle from 2009. The idea is to reduce the amount of strain placed on the torso in the event of a head-on collision. The belts are currently destined for the next generation S-Class, and for the rear passengers only.

“Mercedes-Benz is pursuing its safety initiative in the rear of vehicles with the Beltbag,” comments Prof. Dr.-Ing. Rodolfo Schöneburg, Head of Passive Safety and Vehicle Functions at Mercedes-Benz Cars. “After all, the excellent standard of safety offered by Mercedes-Benz doesn’t just apply to all model series, but to all seats, too.”
