The Nissan 370Z is due for a nice change and according to reports the next-generation model will be leaner, lighter and will appeal to a broader group of customers.

In a recent review with Inside Line Nissan’s design boss Shiro Nakamura said that development on the new Z is still at ‘an early stage.’ He said a concept version of the car is currently in the works and should debut at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show.

Nakamura said that the next model has to have a huge impact. Going leaner would be mean dropping the 3.7 liter V6 for a 4-cylinder turbo. “It needs to be lighter, and more accessible to open the door to more people,” he adds.

The recent alliance with Daimler should give Nissan a nice Mercedes-Benz parts bin to dig into for cheaper cost development.
