BMW is swapping out the current rear-wheel drive platform on the X1 model for a front-wheel drive one on the upcoming generation.

The automaker says the change was made to keep production costs down, as the platform will be shared with the new 1-series GT and upcoming Mini models. Known as the UKL, the platform will be implemented in other BMW models, and the next generation of Mini models.

A multi-plate clutch will offer four-wheel drive for the X1, and it its likely to be mated only to a series of four-cylinder engines.

An off-roading variant is also a possibility for the X1 that may potentially boast a 1.5-liter three-cylinder.
