Report: Mercedes-Benz GLA will be the name of Stuttgart’s BMW X1 competitor

The fact that Mercedes-Benz has been working on a compact crossover to be sold alongside the new A-Class and B-Class has never been in question. However, as we get closer to seeing the final product, the car that started out as the BLK eventually became known as the GLC and – according to latest reports – will now be called the GLA.

The Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class will share the same front-wheel-drive architecture that made its debut this year on the new 2013 A-Class and will also underpin the B-Class and the upcoming CLC/CLA.

That will make the GLA a little longer, narrower and shorter than the Range Rover Evoque and Audi Q3. It will also be longer than the new BMW X1.

In terms of powertrain and transmissions, the new Mercedes-Benz GLA will get a lineup of 4-cylinder and turbo diesel options in front or four-wheel-drive configurations.
