Report: Maserati working on a sports car to compete with the Porsche 911

Maserati has an ambitious goal to produce and sell 50,000 units annually by 2015. How does it plan on doing that? First and foremost, the brand is bringing an SUV to the market by 2014, which will be based on the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Second, the brand is also planning a mid-sized sedan that will compete with the bMW 5-Series.

Reports now suggest that the company is working on a new two-seat sports car for 2015 that would compete with the likes of the Porsche 911 and the Audi R8. The car will feature a mid-engined V8 setup.

Insiders say that the new car will be sold under the GrandSport nameplate and will enter limited production of about 1,500 to 2,000 units a year.
