Report: Fiat 500X crossover to debut next year

Fiat has a new addition to its 500 lineup in the works with a new crossover It has named the 500X.

The variant will be based on the 500L platform, but will be taller, and at 420mm in length, it will be longer as well. Power will be the same as the other 500 models, which are the 0.9-liter TwinAir two-cylinder and the 1.4-liter four-cylinder petrol motor. A 1.3-liter turbo MultiJet II diesel variant will also be available.

Fiat is anticipating selling 280,000 of the 500X models each year, and production is scheduled to begin at the Mirafior, Turin factory in December 2013.

Jeep is also expected to be borrowing the model’s platform for its own upcoming, yet unnamed crossover.
