Report: Maserati trademarks ‘Levante’ name, may use it for new sedan

Maserati Quattroporte GTS

We know for some time now that Maserati will be releasing a new smaller sedan that will compete with the likes of the BMW 5-Series and Audi A6. According to reports from the UK, Maserati has filed for a trademark in Europe for the name ‘Levante,’ which will be the name of the new model.

The name ‘Levante’ means ‘east’ or ‘rising’ (in terms of the sun) in Italian.

Of course, this is all tentative since automakers don’t usually use names that they trademark. Maserati in the past has trademarked several names that it hasn’t used including Ghibli, Milia, and Cinqueporte.

The small Maserati sedan will hit markets at the end of 2013 or early 2014.
