Report: Hyundai working on high-performance version of regular models, planning turbo Elantra GT

According to reports coming out of the UK, Hyundai is considering hotter versions of its regular models. Obviously, Hyundai has the capabilities to do so and has proven itself with the Genesis Coupe and the new Veloster Turbo. UK’s AutoExpress says that the company is considering a rival to the Ford Focus ST and Volkswagen GTI with a turbo version of the Hyundai i30 – known to us as the Hyundai Elantra GT.

“We realise, just as you guys do, that we need to inject some life into our cars,” Rushforth said. “We are looking at, and have looked at, introducing sportier models with things like stiffer suspension into the i30 and i40 segments.”

It seems as Hyundai will be leaning towards the same engine found in the Veloster Turbo. The 1.6L Gamma GDI 4-cylinder turbocharged engine making 204-hp and 195 lb-ft of torque.

Hyundai’s sister brand Kia is already working on a hot-hatch version of the European cee’d. Insiders say that the company has already testing a 1.6 liter turbo engine pumping out a strong 240-hp.
