BMW plans on launching a new electric-vehicle brand in China with its local partner, Brilliance JinBei Automobile Co. BMW head of sales and marketing Ian Robertson said that the move is being taken to meet joint venture rules.
“We will have a new brand, it’s a legislative requirement,” he said in an interview with Automotive News Europe. Robertson said that the electric-cars will use some of the technologies that BMW is currently developing for the i3 and i8.
BMW and Brilliance have created a 5 Series plug-in hybrid Concept that they showed at the 2010 Shanghai Motor Show.
In 2013, BMW will launch its all-electric i3 city car, followed by the i8 plug-in hybrid supercar in 2014.
