Report: Production Volkswagen XL1 confirmed for 2013

Volkswagen has plans to build a range of plug-in hybrids in 2013. A cornerstone of that program will be the XL1 Concept, which made its debut at the 2011 Qatar Motor Show earlier this year.

According to Volkswagen AG Chairman, production plans for the XL1 two-seater are proceeding.

“We will start small series production by 2013 – in Germany,” he said. Sources told Automotive News Europe the car will be produced in either Dresden or Wolfsburg.

The Volkswagen XL1 concept combines lightweight carbon fiber construction, low aerodynamic drag, a plug-in hybrid system, a 2.0 TDI diesel unit mated to an electric-motor, a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and lithium-ion battery. All that helps it achieve 0.9L/100 km or just over an outstanding 260 mpg.
