For a while now, it’s been rumored that BMW’s M division is developing its own car – a model that has nothing to do with any model in the BMW brand lineup.

According to Albert Biermann, head of product development M would like to develop its own car.

“From an engineering perspective we have the skills and we’d love to do it,” Biermann said. “We’ve discussed it several times but we’ve never been able to make the business case. Everything we do has to make money.”

Biermann said that BMW’s M department is very skilled in the development of an alternative powertrains. “Our job is to sell emotion and fun, using the technology that’s socially acceptable at the time. Whether that’s a combustion engine or an electric motor, we don’t care.”

Talking about diesel vehicles, Biermann said that a diesel M car is possible. He said that if the technology becomes available, M will do it.
