2012 Volkswagen Jetta

Volkswagen is recalling certain diesel models to fix an issue with fuel-injection pulses that could coincide with the natural frequency of the injector line in specific load and rpm conditions. The problem creates an additional stress in the fuel line.

The recall consists of certain 2009-2012 Jetta TDI and Jetta Sportwagen TDI models built from May 2008 through September 2011. The recall also covers 2010-2012 Volkswagen Golf TDI models built from May 2009 through September 2011. It also covers Audi A3 TDI models from the 2010-2012 model year that were built from September 2009 through September 2011.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that due to the resonance condition, the injector line could develop small cracks that could lead to fuel leakage.

To fix the issue, Volkswagen will install an improved fuel-injector line from the cylinder and will install vibration dampers on all of the injector lines. Volkswagen and Audi will notify owners to have their vehicles repaired free of charge. Owners can contact Volkswagen at 1-800-822-8987.

I bought a 2012 Jetta TDI just 4 days ago and have had stalling problems – usually at the most inopportune times.  Just looked and it was built in September 2011.  One odd thing: it’s a 6-speed manual but has a 5-speed gearshift knob.  In fact all the Jetta and Passat TDI’s I saw when car shopping that have 6-speeds all had 5-speed gearshift knobs…  I guess someone at VW forgot how to count.  Maybe I should get a sharpie and write -6 on the knob?

Those things aside, the new Jetta rides far rougher than the 11-year-old VW I traded in.  VW really needs to drop the shocks and switch back to struts.  And I’m really disliking the tacky “V-Tex” Leatherette upholstery.  At least I can easily buy seat covers.
