2012 Opel Astra GTC

The Lexus CT 200h is about to get its Buick competitor. General Motors’ new Opel Astra GTC in Europe may soon find itself life in the United States as a Buick.

“I could easily see it as a Buick,” Opel’s top executive, Karl-Friedrich Stracke, said in a briefing at Opel’s Russelsheim, Germany, headquarters last week during the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show.

The UAW’s newly negotiated contract with GM further allows for a new model. Union officials said earlier this week GM had committed to build an unspecified compact car at an unspecified plant. The move will create more than 500 jobs.

The Opel Astra GTC unveiled last week at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show will begin deliveries very shortly. GM has received 15,000 orders since it started taking orders in June.

You must have seen my NY Times response (see last week under AUTOMBILES Heading on left margin, go to comments) to my friend, Nick Reilly, President of GM Europe, regarding the speculation of Opel’s sale, in which I suggested this very model rebadging as the revisited Riviera.  Just a coincidence?
I will see Nick tonight in Philadelphia, and update readers on GM’s plans.
