Subaru’s rear-wheel-drive sports car to be called the BRZ

Subaru confirmed today that its new rear-wheel-drive sports car, which is currently under development with Toyota, will be badged the ‘Subaru BRZ.”

“‘BRZ’ stands for ‘Boxer engine’, ‘Rear-wheel drive’ and ‘Zenith’ and embodies ultimate passion for the new sports car and confidence in its distinctive trademark and core technology: the ‘Horizontally-Opposed Subaru Boxer engine,'” Subaru said in a statement.

Production for the Subaru BRZ is scheduled for spring 2012.

Power is expected to come from a 200-hp Subaru boxer engine with the platform coming from Toyota.
