Honda will be releasing a new four-cylinder diesel Civic for the UK market. The new oil burner is said to be cleaner, more powerful and economical than the outgoing diesel.

The 2.2L i-DTEC in the 2012 Honda Civic Hatchback produces 148-hp and a not so terrible 258.11 lb-ft of torques. These figures were achieved thanks to an updated version of Honda’s i-DTEC valvetrain system. Additionally, the oil lubrication flow has been reworked to reduce circulation loss and friction.

“To achieve a good CO2 figure, you need to optimise every aspect of the car,” said Katsushi Watanabe, Development Leader for the engine. “Reducing the emissions was our key target and we’re proud to say that we have achieved this without compromising the high performance character of the engine. We want our customers to have fun when they drive this car.”

Unfortunately, the press release we received was just for the UK market and spoke for the UK market only. With the way diesel is still being suppressed in this country, I think it’s safe to say that it will be a couple years before Honda will introduce a diesel passenger car, if they ever do and at which point, when we’re ready, Honda should probably have a new engine out specifically designed for the US market.
