GM CEO: Opel is not for sale

Even though General Motors CEO Dan Akerson may be fed up with Opel, he stands behind the brand and is killing speculation that the brand is for sale. Speaking at a GM plant to officially launch labor talks with the United Auto Workers, Akerson said that the European unit is not up for sale.

“We don’t comment on speculation — and there has been a lot of speculation — but I will say this: Opel is not for sale,” Akerson said.

Rumors of Opel’s sales began in early June with reports by German media stating that GM may sell the brand to Chinese automakers or Volkswagen AG.

“Most CEOs in this position will tell you a division is not for sale until it’s sold,” Akerson said. “I’ve seen the story before.”
