While you were preparing for the big July 4 weekend, China opened the world’s longest bridge over water last week on Thursday. Known as the Jiaozhou Bay Bridge, the bridge is a whopping 26.4 miles long, according to Guinness World Records.
We’re not really sure how much the bridge cost to build but prices range from $2.3 billion all the way up to $8.8 billion. Supported by more than 5,000 pillars, the Jiaozhou Bay Bridge took more than four years to build by 10,000 workers.
Jiaozhou Bay Bridge connects China’s eastern port city of Qingdao to Huangdao island. It shortens the distance between the two cities by 18 miles and cuts travel time from 40 to 20 minutes.
According to the Guinness World Records, the previous longest bridge over water was the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway in Louisiana. The Jiaozhou Bay Bridge is more than 2.5 miles longer.
