The new 2012 BMW 650i Coupe will hit showrooms in the US this fall carrying a nice 4.4L twin-turbo V8 engine making 400-hp. But what if you don’t want to go that fast and want to get better gas mileage? Well, BMW will be offering the 640i for that.

A BMW spokesman confirmed today that the company will offer a 6-cylinder version of the new 2012 6-Series in the U.S. this fall – a version of the car that will wear the 640i badge. The 2012 BMW 640i will be powered by a 3.0 liter twin-scroll, turbocharged 6-cylinder making 300-hp and 300 lb-ft of torque.

Prices for the 2012 BMW 6-Series lineup will be announced closer to launch.

Refresher: Power for the 2012 BMW 650i Coupe comes from a the  company’s 4.4L twin-turbo V8 engine making 400-hp between 5,500 and 6,400 rpm with a maximum torque of 450 lb-ft between 1,750 and 4,500 rpm. Mated to BMW’s new 8-speed Sport Automatic gearbox or the traditional 6-speed manual transmission, the 2012 650i Coupe goes from 0 to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds with a top speed of 155 mph.

    Why call it the 640? They should’ve just called it the 635 and kicked it old school. That would make more sense sine the *35 models (635, 735, 535) were all powered by the M30 straight six. All of the models donning *40 (740, 540, 840) were all powered by the M60/M62 V8.
