Audi working on Q2, will compete with likes of Mini Countryman

So we received news earlier in the year that Audi had confirmed that they’re working on a BMW X6 competitor, dubbed the Q6. In addition to the Q6 and the release of the new Q3 and rumored Q4, Audi is adding another SUV to their lineup, dubbed the Q2.

“It’s clear that demand for SUVs and crossovers is still in an upswing phase and will remain so for some years to come. We want to make sure we have the coverage to satisfy it,” said an Audi insider.

The idea of the Q2, which will be Audi’s smallest SUV, is to compete with the likes of the MINI Countryman and will have a base price of around £18,000 in the UK. Additionally, engines will be carried over from the current A1.

As for the Q6, it will be based on the current Q7 and won’t be seen in showrooms until 2016 at the earliest. This is due to the introduction of the new MLB-based platform that currently underpins the new Q5 and will also be the backbone of the new Q4 and Porsche Cajun. In a goal to keep weight down for Audi’s future SUVs, extensive use of aluminum, composite plastic and carbon fiber are expected.
