Report: Mercedes-Benz working on BMW X6 competitor called GLS
Many have a love or hate relationship with BMW’s X6 SAV aka Sport Activity Vehicle. People either love the design of crossover with a sloping roofline or they are completely disgusted by it. Personally, I think it’s a very unconventional and great looking vehicle – and to that end – so does Mercedes-Benz.
The Stuttgart automaker is reportedly planning a competitors to the BMW X6 called the GLS, according to high-placed sources. The model is scheduled to debut sometime in 2014 and will use the same unibody platform that underpins the new 2012 Mercedes-Benz M-Class and the new Jeep Grand Cherokee.

“After closely monitoring sales trends, we’ve concluded there is potential for an additional off-road model with a more sporting emphasis than the new M-class,” an insider told AutoCar.
Powertrain options should come right out of the new Mercedes-Benz M-Class and production may also be held at the company’s Tuscaloosa, Alabama plant where the new M-Class is built.
