Rumor: Volkswagen Tiguan TDI could come to the U.S. by 2015

Volkswagen has been teasing its fans with the prospect of a diesel version of the Tiguan since 2008. With repeated reports of a Tiguan TDI possibility, consumers may be asking if we will ever see its release. Volkswagen says yes, but not for another few years. A TDI version is certainly in demand, with requests from consumers and dealers frequently reaching the corporation. But complications are still holding back a production-ready design.

Cost plays a large part in the issue. While existing diesel technology is cost effective, the implementation required to get the engine up to emissions standards has not been, so far. The weight of the Tiguan makes it necessary to use an alternative technology from the nitrous oxide storage canister of the 2.0-liter Golf and Jetta TDI versions.

The AdBlue systems used on the Passat and Toureg TDI versions are an alternative option, but it is difficult to make it work for the Tiguans’ price range. Another concern is that Volkswagen may not be able to meet supply demands, given the anticipation of its release, and its already existing European market.

Despite the current hang-ups, Volkswagen is still considering a U.S.-market Tiguan TDI for 2015.
