Reports coming out of Europe suggest that BMW is planning to shake-up its naming strategy for its smaller coupes and convertibles, as well as planning to shift its 1-Series model onto a front-wheel-drive platform.

According to CAR Magazine, the coupe and convertible versions of BMW’s current models will allow adopt even number badging. For example, the 1-Series coupe and convertible will be come the 2-Series and the coupe and convertible versions of the 3-Series will become the 4-Series.

The changeover is expected to start in 2013.

The changeover of the 1-Series from a rear-wheel-drive platform to a front-wheel-drive platform will start in 2014. The front-drive platform will be shared with Mini.
