2012 Nissan GT-R vs. 2012 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1

Since yesterday General Motors announced that the 2012 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 set a new Nurburgring lap record, we felt it was only right to put the car in a ‘Let’s Talk Numbers’ battle against its biggest competitor – the 2012 Nissan GT-R. For argument sake, we even added the Nurburgring for each car’s 2012 model year run on the Nordschleife.

Let’s get started.

I know the ZR1 is fastest around the nurburgring but if i were to purchase one of these it would have to be the GT-R because it just handles better than any Corvette out there

  • Nate

Honda Accord on steroids?  No thanks.  Give me the ZR1 so I can have some fun powersliding.

  • Stacy

I’ll go with the GTR.  3 reasons: better 0-60, better fuel economy, less expensive.  These to me are the biggest factors

  • Neeravreddy

ehh drove a GTR and all i can say is BORING,  its just like driving an automatic G35 doesnt feel special, and you get tired and bored of the paddle shifters sooner or later, ill take the zr1, it handles better, and its only slower to sixty because its rear wheel drive, and ive seen zr1′s with stock tires run 10.79 at the track, cant say the same about the gtr, and the zr1′s tranny is so much for fun, cant get enough of it, and it just sounds SOOOOOOOOOO MUCH BETTER!

One thing to note about the Nurbugring time of the 2012 GT-R – it was done on semi-wet conditions, so it’s not the full potential of the car. In the dry it will be faster; how much so is still in speculation (Nissan themselves estimated 7:20 or better).

  • adasa

gm just lie.. like the julair government in australia

  • Guest

IMO I think the GT-R could probably do a 7:19 in dry conditions. But beyond that, why is their so much praise for this cheaply built american vehicle? And before someone says go back to europe or whatever, I’m from the states. But having driven numerous supercars from around the world such as the Pagani Zonda, Bugatti Veyron, Ferrari Enzo, Nissan GT-R, and yes of course the ZR1 though not the latest 2012 model. The ZR1 is like the ugly stepchild you just don’t care to have. I’d much rather spend my money towards an Ariel Atom on sale somewhere, and that would blow the ZR1 out of the water all the way up to 200mph with no traction until 5th gear or so.

  • Pabloherasme

Boring? not until you turn on the RWD Mode on the GTR… Yes it does have it

  • Bafiajohn

What you meant to say guest is “I have read about people
driving Pagani Zonda, Bugatti Veyron, Ferrari Enzo, Nissan GT-R, and yes of
    course the ZR1.”

  • Guest

Well the Gtr is much cheaper than the ZR1, so it gives you some allowance for modification such as tuning. Maybe you can just hand it over to Hennessey.

  • Zane

The best advice for anyone considering buying either of these cars is to go out and test drive them for yourself.  I live near the Rocky Mountains, so AWD would certainly be a handy feature, in my opinion – unless you have tons of cash and just want to get a fast car for track days.

  • TheBrain

Buy a GT-R for $20,000 less and spend half of the money left over, and beat the zr1, then have $10,000 to do what ever the hell you want with. (maintenance or whatever)

  • Livebyquartermile

you will need the extra money to keep the GTR running. they are blowing up at an alarming rate when run hard. the ZR1 will still be running 15 years form now probally with the same sparkplugs, while the nissan will have its engine rebuilt several times over. 3 GTRs went to to the local track two weeks ago, all three went home on trailers with blown engines, none of them survived the day. same happened a month ago, when two GTRs did a couple track runs, then two of them went to the shop on trailers. ( one with a tranny blown and the other the engine.)
they are getting known at the track as a ” disposable car”/

  • gmman

Zr1 is just a fuckn beast corvettes been out sence the 60′s n started the racing era back then n now running stonger than ever n its rwd real men drive corvettes not awd gtr its 4 women to drive period

  • c5guy

Dont trash talk cars u cant afford …..

  • Lovecoffeesomuch

Vett was cheating with race tires to get those numbers, read Motor Trend on latest Vett z06. It was fastest on track compare with other cars but Motor Trend told the credit went to the tires but not the car. With the same tires used with GTR, none of Vett Zo6 or ZR1 able to beat GTR number.

  • Melissa Edwards

Let me tell you I’m young not driving yet but I know alot about cars. The ZR1 had to be down tuned 168 horsepower to compete with Ferrari and Porshe. When you put that HP back on its nothing to mess with and I can take a Vette across the country and take it to any Chevy dealer and get it fixed right away but the the GTR you take it to a nissan dealer and you have to wait days for your parts to come in. ANd the only reason the vette was slower is that its rear wheel drive its never the tires.

  • david

gtr has all wheel drive fully auto shifted 6 speed a trained mokey could drive it zr1 real wheel drive real manually shifted 6 speed no bs computers doing the work for you and it rapes the gtr

  • Trygrafoss

    zr1 all day

  • Metlqatar

can anyone from GM explain why the ZR1 is not 4WD ?

  • EHENRY7799

PUT THE SUPRA MOTOR IN THE GT-R OR A V8. IF YOU CAN COMPARE A V6 TO A V8 , THEY NEED TO GO BACK TO THE DRAWING TABLE. I HAVE NOT SEEN A VETTE TOP THE SUPRA IN THE MILE. FORD TOPS THE LIST WITH THE GT40. I LOVE THE VETTE.

Why dont you call gm and ask them yourself
Alot of haters dont like corvettes its the american
Car since 1953 and it still kick ass

  • DUCC DUC

ZR1 is a performance car so is GTR. Something should start somewthere and levelled up theN. Not only one person nor a few people on the internet talking about the GTR since its first 480HP model. It has a special attraction about its general performance vs price … so on. That s why people and specially the SPORT car clubs or magazine keep talking about this car GTR. Check TOP GEAR for the 2012 GTR Black Edition, it beats BUGATI on the track and ranked first passing over LFA, Porche and ZR1, … Check the facts.

  • GMfan87

Unnecessary added weight and understeer.  And I think you mean AWD.  There’s a big difference.

These two cars are both fantastic in their own rights.  It all comes down to a matter of opinion.  Are you the type of driver that just gets his rocks off through pure speed no matter how it comes?  Or do you like to feel connected with the car and have lap times that are a result of your own abilities?

It’s 6 one, half a dozen the other.  I happen to prefer the latter.

  • GMfan87

Yes, the tires make a huge difference.  No, they aren’t “race tires”. Corvette has their own tire engineer.  Guess where else he works.  On the Corvette Racing team in ALMS.  They take that experience and put what they learn into the stock cars.

So, the pilot sport cup tires aren’t “race tires”.  They come on the car bone stock.  However, you could argue they were developed on the race track…kinda.  Either way it’s not “cheating”, unless that’s you’re definition of solid engineering.  In that case, yeah, they cheated. ;)

  • GMfan87

I bet that Ariel Atom would make a great daily driver as well.

  • jre

Dont know which Pagani Zonda you think that you drove but assuming that this was the most amazing wet dream you have ever had I am betting that it was the most expensive one from the top 10 most expensive cars in the world (Google it). You have driven $5,120,000 worth of cars in your life time. You must think that everyone reading this is an idiot or simething. Oh and good luck in finding that Ariel Atom “somewhere on sale” body work is on the list of options for that car. How do you try to compare a corvette to a car that dont even have a body, it is a tubular chassis with an engine a seat and a stearing wheel. What a choad.

  • Robinson Dean33

their is no other car in the world like the GT-R it is just little V6 challenging the world of V8 and V10 cars that’s more than value for money…

  • Erie_cb_violator

The truth is when people buy a zr1 they give a damn about fuel milage as I don’t either and the Corvette is also a more designed elegant car over al and handles better

  • Afs85

Less expensive….ok we get it. You are poor, okay moving along…

  • Da1nOnly

I just dont get people…the corvette has more power and its lighter but it gets killed on quarter mile and 0-60mph and people just dont see that…..but then after the 1/4 it passes the gtr…well duh it has more power. The gt-r is amazing, very much hated on and wont ever be appreciated for showing the future in automotive…it takes a corvette 600+ hp to keep up with this machine. I would choose the gtr for being cheaper and being the underdog and still smashin em

  • Metlqatar

yes I meant AWD like the GTR & the 911 turbo. The problem with the ZR1 (which I had for a whole year) was I couldn’t get a good road grip. The car was fantastic to drive, the best thrill, but, I was struggling to pass 300hp cars. Now I have a 911 turbo. Nothing comes close. I am sure it takes a lot of engineering work to make the ZR1 AWD but it would be worth every effort.
