Chrysler sales trailing Marchionne’s target of 2 million for 2011

While Chrysler is eating up all the good headlines as of recently, the company’s global sales still trail the goals of CEO Sergio Marchionne set for 2011. In May, Chrysler Group LLC increased 11 percent from a year earlier. Global deliveries were up to 160,144 units last month with year through May sales increasing 17 percent to 714,403 units.

That figure is 32 percent behind the growth rate of Marchionne’s target for the year. Marchionne is pushing for Chrysler to hit 2 million vehicles this year and turn its first annual net profit since emerging from bankruptcy in 2009.

“I think we’re going to sell 2 million cars this year,” Marchionne told reporters last week while visiting a Chrysler plant in Toledo, Ohio. “That’s what I want to sell.”
