Ford F-150

Six cylinder engines are gaining popularity by the masses as gas prices show hardly any signs of coming down to 2008 levels. FoMoCo F-150 full-size pickup is a great example of how many consumers are opting for V6 engines rather than traditional V8 power plants.

In May, the 3.5L EcoBoost twin-turbo V6 gasoline engine made up 41 percent of F-150 retail sales, up 4 percent from April. The new 3.7L naturally aspirated 6-cylinder accounted for 14 percent of retail sales. That bough the total sales of F-150 6-cylinder units to 55 percent of the model’s share.

While that may show a shift in consumer choice as more people look to save on gas – what’s interesting is the extremely high take rate for Ford’s new 6-cylinder units. Competitor Toyota and GM V6 sales are still in the single-digit percentage point areas.
