Next Jeep Liberty is important for Chrysler, must have strong off-roading capability

The next-generation Jeep Liberty is a very important model for the Jeep brand and Chrysler Group LLC’s fate.

“That vehicle has to be perfect,” Chrysler CEO told reporters earlier this year at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show.

Chrysler is hoping to be a leader in the mid-sized SUV segment once again, a place it dominated for more than 10 years with the iconic Cherokee.

Many enthusiasts are looking at the next-generation Liberty with a lot of skeptic. Many worry that a Fiat-derived Jeep might be a undesirable repeat of the Daimler’s Jeep Compass with no off-roading capability.

Enthusiasts are looking for a 4-door Jeep that is very capable off-road as the Wrangler, but more comfortable on-road as a daily driver. They also are looking for a U.S. diesel option.
