When Fiat first started opening its dealerships in the United States, it said that Chrysler dealers would get first crack at the Italian franchise. Fiat still has plans to have 130 dealerships open by the end of 2011, 59 had opened as of last week.
The original list of 130 was made up entirely of Chrysler dealers, however dealership plans that had been approved by the Italian company fell through for various reasons
Fiat is now looking to add its first non-Chrysler Group dealers to its retail network, said Laura Soave, the head of Fiat in North America. A Chrysler spokesman said that Fiat has sent letters of intent to seven non-Chrysler dealers.
According to Soave, Chrysler still has plans to add 35 dealers to its network by the end of 2012, bringing the total number of showrooms to 165.
