At the 2011 New York Auto Show, BMW announced that it will start leasing 700 units of the ActiveE this fall in metropolitan New York and other select US metropolitan markets. The lease deal comes in at $499 a month with a down payment of $2,250 for 24-months. The reservation process will begin in late summer 2011 but in the meantime, BMW will team up with AeroVironment to provide home charging system, installation and warranty to BMW drivers, as well as full BMW dealer support.
“AeroVironment’s EVSE-RS charging station will deliver approximately 25 miles of driving range per hour of charging time,” AeroVironment said in a statement. “A complete charge from a fully discharged state will take between four and five hours, delivering the ActiveE’s maximum range of 100 miles.”

The stations will be installed with a 240-volt electric circuit in owners’ home garages as part of the vehicle’s total driving system,.
The BMWActiveE vehicles will be distributed in the major metropolitan markets of Boston, Los Angeles, New York City, San Diego, San Francisco Bay Area and Sacramento.
Refresher: The BMW ActiveE is powered by an electric synchronous motor that produces 168-hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. That pushes the BMW ActiveE from 0-60 mph in just 9 seconds with a limited (to preserve battery charge) top speed of 90 mph. On a full charge of its lithium-ion battery provided by SB LiMotive, the BMW ActiveE can travel a total of 100 miles before needing to be recharged.
