Report: Volkswagen Polo R likely, won’t happen until 2013
Earlier this year, Volkswagen said that it was unlikely to launch an R version of the Polo since it couldn’t make a business case for it and since it doesn’t want to jeopardize sales of the Golf R or Golf GTI. However, earlier this month, Volkswagen released the Volkswagen Polo R WRC – that’s right a Volkswagen Polo R for the FIA World Rally Championship in 2013.
Does that mean we’ll finally see a Volkswagen Polo R?
According to Volkswagen board member Ulrich Hackenberg, the WRC Polo R may make a variant beyond the current Polo GTI “more likely.”

“You can see how the World Rally Championship program would increase the probability of an R version of the base model [Polo],” Hackenberg told AutoCar.
The Volkswagen Polo R WRC is equipped with a four-wheel drive and a 1.6L TSI four-banger good for 300-hp. Of course, that’s not the engine that will make it into the production Polo R, but we believe it’ll be something a little north of 200-hp.
When will it come out? Don’t expect to see a Volkswagen Polo R until 2013.
