Let's Talk Numbers: Hyundai Sonata Hybrid vs. Ford Fusion Hybrid

Welcome to our fifth edition of Let’s Talk Numbers, a segment where we take two or more cars and do a number battle and leave it up to our readers to decide which car is a better purchase.

Yesterday, we took a look at three new compact sedans, where the 2011 Hyundai Elantra seemed be the crowd favorite. Today we pin another new Hyundai against a very popular competitor in its segment. It’s time for the 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid to go to war with the 2011 Ford Fusion Hybrid.

The Sonata styling blows the Ford’s away. Hands down the challenger is the winner, style-wise, at least. Its numbers are much better than the Ford as well.

  • Rgjones11

Show me the trunk and interior dimensions. And palmtrees says “it’s numbers are better? hybrids are about fuel mileage, look at those numbers again!

  • Fordworker

@rgjone, The vast majority of my driving is highway mileage, the Sonata numbers for my situation are better than Ford’s… and it looks alot sexier!

  • Mail

I hate Fords but the last Hyundai I rode in was just a tin can, so……

  • Pat

Hyundai Sonata for sure for me….it’s better looking and cheaper

  • Stewie

Ford – even w/ the Gillette tripe blade grille.

  • kfarnoldy

Ford – I want a car that drives better, is quieter, is designed by Americans, and whose profits go to Americans.

One more set of numbers, in this case money in the hands of American workers: the Sonata assembled in the USA, the Fusion in Mexico.  In this situation, buying an American product means buying a “Korean” car.

  • Hybrid Car Fan

Have to admit, never been a fan of Hyundai, but the new Hyundai line up seems like a remarkable upgrade from previous generation cars. My vote for price, power, and style is clearly the Sonata Hybrid

That’s quite a close match, I would say.  Notable slight differences here though are the type of battery used, fuel economy and all-electric mode.  I think what separates them would be, hmm, the exterior design.  Let’s get some test-drive reviews to see which is the real winner.

  • Astro

Fusion may get slightly better gas mileage, but it’s about $2600 more expensive. Based on $4 gas and average annual mileage of 15000 miles, it would take over 20 years to save that money in gas savings. So the numbers are better for the Sonata.

    Sonata looks much better
I doubt sonata using lithium ion battery

  • Oscar

Hyundai always has been better than Ford
     Hyundai is better in design
     Better in quality
     And better in technology
Rather Hyundai is better in everything that Ford definitively Hyundai is the best…
