Ray LaHood has been doing all he can to curb distracted driving – however, automakers keep taking in-car connectivity and infotainment systems to the next level.
A new collaboration between Volkswagen of America and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (SENSEable City Lab) aims to bring an innovative drive experience by using up the empty space on your dashboard and using it to display a 3d navigation system, real-time event information, tourist attractions and other things that will keep your eyes anywhere but the road ahead of you.
Known as the AIDA project, the system uses 3D projectors and displays a large map on the unused space on top of the dashboard.
Will it take off? We’d love to see it in action, but we doubt you’ll be seeing this technology until cars eventually drive themselves in the future (if that ever happens… and we hope it doesn’t).
