Chrysler leases more office space as Auburn Hills gets packed

Chrysler Group LLC - Auburn Hills Headquarters

As Chrysler Group LLC grows its fortunes and adds new vehicles to its lineup, it has signed a lease for more office space near its Auburn Hills headquarters. Firm Piedmont Office Realty Trust said it has completed a new long-term lease agreement with Chrysler for 210,000 square feet of space. The building is located at 1075 West Entrance in July.

“We are challenged for space at headquarters to accommodate growth of the company,” said Chrysler spokesman Mike Palese. “This lease will help mitigate that challenge.”

Currently, Chrysler employs about 10,000 employees at its 4.4 million-square foot complex. During its bankruptcy process in 2009, Chrysler laid off tens of thousands leaving a bunch of vacant spaces at the building. However, ever since Fiat jumped in on the game, the Auburn Hills headquarters is bursting at the seams.

The new building will have enough space for about 1,300 employees. Chrysler will use the additional space to bring IT people from the tech center, the Sterling Heights Assembly Plant and the Centerline Mopar distribution center. The space they leave from Auburn will be used by Chrysler’s engineering staff as they work on a new vehicle lineup.
