Nissan is ready to take motorsports to the zero-emissions level. Today at the 2011 New York Auto Show, Nissan unveiled the new Nissan LEAF NISMO RC Prototype.

Hoping to kill the perception “that electric vehicles fall on the dull side of the automotive enthusiasm scale,” the Nissan LEAF NISMO RC is powered by the same setup as the production LEAF but is stripped of the rear door, a rear seat, trunk, audio system, navigation, carpeting and other amenities.

The Nissan LEAF NISMO RC produces 107-hp and 207 lb-ft of torque from its 80kW AC synchronous motor  that allows it to speed from 0 to 62 mph in 6.85 seconds with a top speed of 6.85 seconds.

Some downsides? Nissan says that the Leaf NISMO RC is projected to have a running time of just 20 minutes under racing conditions and reaching 80 percent charge will take 30 minutes when using the quick charging port. Imagine having a race that has a half hour break every 20 minutes – not our idea of “automotive enthusiasm.”
