One of the most famous—and woeful—cars ever made in automobile history made a new debut earlier today at the 2011 New York Auto Show today. Hail aus Deustcheland, comes the brand new, completely redesigned ‘people’s car:’ the 2012 Volkswagen Beetle.
When it first debuted in 1938, it sold over 21 million copies in air-cooled, rear-engined, rear-wheel drive configuration, giving it the most widely and longest sold platform ever. The second reiteration of “das volkswagen” was named the “New Beetle,” and although it maintained the spirit of the original, it also maintained the woeful driving characteristics. The third generation however promises to be the most fuel-efficient and sporty Beetle ever.
The interior mimics the current sporty and solid interior found in VAG’s other hits like the GTi. The exterior maintains the bulbous proportions but with a longer hood with the sloping rear remaining.
The engines offered will be VW’s familiar 2.5L straight-five, 2.0L TDI turbodiesel and 2.0L TSI gasoline four-banger. The 2.5L five is good for 170hp and 177 lb-ft of torque with the option of a five-speed manual or a six-speed automatic, giving the new Beetle 22/31 city/highway mpg for the manual and 22/29 mpg respectively. The 2.0L TSI Beetle is good for about 200hp and 207 lb-ft of torque making it the sportiest Beetle ever.

The 2.0L TDI Clean Diesel will also be the most fuel efficient Beetle ever, good for 140hp and a strong 236 lb-ft of torque. Fuel economy estimates are 29/40 for a combined estimated cycle of 33 mpg.
The 2012 Beetle will go on sale around September or October this year with prices being announced closer to the launch date.
