700 BMW ActiveE units coming to U.S., leasing starts at $499 with $2,250 down
The BMW 1-Series based ActiveE electric-coupe made its debut today in advance of the 2011 New York Auto Show, marking another significant step in the BMW Group’s commitment to be a sustainable leader in automotive products and services.
“The BMW ActiveE is part of our ongoing strategy to develop environmentally friendly, yet high-performance vehicles,” said Rich Steinberg, manager of Electric Vehicle Operations and Strategy, BMW NA. “It brings us another step closer to the realization of the BMW i3, which we will launch in 2013.”

BMW will begin leasing a total of 700 units of the ActiveE starting this fall in metropolitan New York and other select US metropolitan markets. Prices start at $499 a month with a down payment of $2,250 for 24-months. The reservation process will begin in late summer 2011.
Refresher: The BMW ActiveE is powered by an electric synchronous motor that produces 168-hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. That pushes the BMW ActiveE from 0-60 mph in just 9 seconds with a limited (to preserve battery charge) top speed of 90 mph. On a full charge of its lithium-ion battery provided by SB LiMotive, the BMW ActiveE can travel a total of 150 miles before needing to be recharged.
