Remote control vehicles clear radioactive debris at Fukushima nuclear plant

Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco) has deployed robots and remote-controlled heavy machinery to work at the crisis-hit Fukushima nuclear plant in a move to reduce human exposure to radiation as Japan raised the severity of the disaster from 5 to 7.

A month after the 9.0 magnitude earthquake, Tepco released three remote-controlled excavators equipped with cameras to clear radioactive debris around the unit 3 reactor, said a Tepco spokeswoman.

The three excavators were donated by two Japanese construction companies. Tepco has also launched a Honeywell T-Hawk micro air vehicle to study the plant from above.
