Saab has apparently canceled plans to adopt and update the existing 9-3 platform for next-generation models. According to sources in Trollhattan, Saab has decided to to take a more costly plan where they will develop their own hi-tech modular chassis and components that can be stretched from 4.2m long ‘9-2’ to a 5.5m-long ‘9-7’.

The new architecture will underpin the replacement for the 9-3, 9-5 and 9-4X. Plans for the upcoming 9-1/9-2 will require a different structure, the sources said.

Known as the ‘Phoenix’ architecture, the setup will use a McPherson strut design and a new ‘race-car style’ 5-link rear axle which will be made by ZF at a new factory in Sweden.

At the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, Saab unveiled a new concept called PhoeniX, which hints at the future design for the brand.
