Volkswagen has been pretty persistent about its desire to purchase Alfa Romeo from Fiat SpA and rumor now has it that Alfa is likely to receive direct assistance from Porsche if V-dub has its own way. Reports suggest that Alfa Romeo would get help from Porsche, which is developing a new flat 4-cylinder engine for a new entry-level roadster that will sit below the Boxster.

Volkswagen considers Alfa Romeo as a key potential asset in its goal to become the world’s largest manufacturing group by 2018. It also has some free production capacity at Seat’s Martorell facility.

A Fiat Group spokesman has told AutoCar that the company has “drawn a line” under any sell-off. “We shut the door in their faces and now they’re trying to get in the window,” he said.

At the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, Volkswagen’s Chairman Ferdinand Piech said that he can bring sales of Alfa Romeo to nearly 400,000 units within 5 years.

Why even post this.. Fiat’s Chairman couldn’t have been anymore clear, VW will never get Alfa while he’s there, Alfa is doing just fine and is on the come back…he also said VW should worry about it’s own failing brand…Seat.

VW shouldn’t be purchasing Porsche, let alone trying to buy Alfa Romeo. The bosses at VW has way to many brands currently to worry about, and they want to purchase another one? They should be fired. Ford and GM had a few brands in the past and that didn’t work out so well for them, you would think VW would learn from the mistakes of others. Anyways, VW owns 8 brands and owns 19% of Suzuki and 49% of Porsche. Of it’s current brands VW was to make Seat into a “Sporty brand”, that hasn’t really materialized, like Skoda (affordable eastern European built cars), Seat models are usually based on some older VW platform or a newer platform with the usual VW bargain bin components, and while both Skoda and Seat are cheaper than there VW siblings, there are no real mechanical difference, and the brands also lack in creativity. Higher end VW brands like Lamborghini, Bentley, and Bugatti have there own issues and in most cases don’t even make a profit for VW. Under FIAT, Alfa can really shine with products like the 4C, and it appears that Alfa is on the right path with its future models which hopefully we’ll get to see in the US.

Alfa Romeo needs to drastically improve its after-sales experience as no matter how good a car is at some point it will need to be worked on. Love the cars (most of them) + Love the brand, the history, the passion BUT that is not enough (so far) to overcome the sad experience of ownership.

Porsche would be lucky to have access to Alfa Romeo technolgy, and not the other way around. Having driven both brands, Alfas are alive with passion while the Porsche was a mere appliance useful for getting from point A to point B.

As long as VW will keep focusing more on the number of cars they sell and less on the cars themselves they have absolutely no chance to make better cars. I hove they will never get Alfa Romeo; If they wanted to buy another european brand why didn’t they get Volvo or SAAB which were for sale. I Think they are just afraid, very afraid of the Alfa’s come back.
    Alfa we believe in you!
