The Cadillac ATS, a rival to the BMW 3-Series, will go on sale late next year. The model has been in the works since before General Motors filed for bankruptcy. At the time, GM management said that the car was aimed directly at BMW 3-Series buyers and said that it would have a rear-wheel-drive configuration, similar dimensions and performance characteristics.

According to a recent reports, the Cadillac ATS will become Cadillac’s new entry-level model and will be positioned below the CTS. The CTS will be redesigned in 2013 or 2014 and will likely grow in size.

The ATS will first launch as a sedan and will be followed by a coupe and convertible variant over a year. GM announced last year the ATS will be built at its Lansing Grand River plant in Lansing, Mich.

Based on GM’s Alpha platform, the Cadillac ATS will future a powertrain lineup consisting of 270-hp 2.0L turbo engine and a 330-hp 3.6L V6. The Cadillac ATS-V is rumored to carry a 6.2L V8 engine making 470-hp.

All we know is we can’t wait until late next year.
