During an announcement today by Johan de Nysschen, the president of Audi’s American division, the automaker will offer a diesel engine option for the Audi A8, A6 and Q5 in the United States within the next 24 to 30 months.

The Audi A8 and A6 are expected to be powered by Audi’s 3.0L turbo-diesel V6 unit making 225-hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. The same engine is found in the Audi Q7 TDI crossovers. The Audi Q5 is scheduled to receive the company’s 2.0L diesel 4-cylinder engine making 140-hp and 236 lb-ft of torque.

de Nysschen explained that the current-generation Audi A4 wasn’t designed to accommodate a diesel engine in the United States. However, the next-generation Audi A4, which is well under development, will offer a diesel engine for the U.S. market. Nonetheless, that won’t happen until 2014.
