Volkswagen’s Chairman Ferdinand Piech has been pretty adamant about his desire to purchase Alfa Romeo. Speaking at the premiere of Volkswagen models at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, Piech said that Volkswagen could nearly quadruple the annual sales of Alfa Romeo if Fiat SpA sold the underperforming brand.
Piech said that Volkswagen could bring sales of Alfa Romeo to nearly 400,000 units within 5 years.
Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne has repeatedly refused to sell Alfa Romeo and is betting that he can bring it back to its former glory days before Fiat purchased it in 1986.
“Volkswagen has time,” Piech said in Geneva.
Marchionne, in a recent interview with Forbes, said that Alfa was a ‘money loser’ in the seven years since he has been at the company. He went on to say: “I’m not sure if it ever really made any money.”
