De Tomaso Sport Luxury Sedan SLS

De Tomaso Sport Luxury Sedan SLS

Earlier this week we showed you the first pictures of a new De Tomaso vehicle that looked something like the BMW 5-Series Gran Turusmo. Today, De Tomaso officially released the first images and details of its new model dubbed SLS or Sport Luxury Sedan. Of course, De Tomaso has no plans of naming the four-wheel-drive crossover the SLS since Mercedes-Benz will probably sue them – the final name of the model will be released at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show next week.

The De Tomaso Sport Luxury Sedan will go into production later this year and will be available with two gasoline powertrains including a 550-hp V8 and a 300-hp V6.

Company Chairman Mr. Gianmario Rossignolo plans on building 3,000 units of the SLS a year as well as 3,000 sedan and 2,000 coupes. All will be built at De Tomaso’s plant, a former Pininfarina SpA. factory near Turin. De Tomaso’s three-model range of aluminum vehicles are based on a new construction technology called Univis.

The new De Tomaso company will invest 116 million ($159 million USD) euros in its rebirth project.

Take the iconic Lancia Stratos. Brilliant car. Tremendous success. So what does Fiat do (Fiat owns both Lancia and Ferrari) about recreating the Stratos? Well, they take a perfectly good F430 Scuderia and base the reinterpretation Stratos on that. FULL MARKS!
De Tomaso, creator of the masculine, muscular Pantera Sportscar (Italian body + American power) have decided to re-launch its brand by building a generic sedan. That is like Da Vinci painting his own version of Warhol’s Campbell Soup Can.
Usually when one tries to revive a dormant brand they would start with its iconic model and if successful, move on from there. Why make it difficult, thereby multiplying the chances of overall failure, by doing it backside first? With De Tomaso that should be a no brainer right? Start with a cool Modern Pantera and go from there. In any case, good luck with the re-launch. You are going to need it.
