FoMoCo said yesterday that it will recall 144,000 Ford F-150 pickups over concerns raised by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that air bags could deploy without warning. The recall consists of 144,000 Ford F-150 models from the 2005-2006 model year ‘for a relatively low risk of inadvertent air bag deployments.’ Ford spokesman Wes Sherwood.

The move comes after Ford continuously refused to recall the pickups in the face of pressure by NHTSA. Nearly a month ago, NHTSA sent a letter to Ford asking the automaker to recall about 1.3 million 2004-2006 F-150 pickups after a dozen people were injured when their air bag deployed without warning.

NHTSA has been investigating the issue since Sept. 2009 and decided to send a formal letter for the recall after Ford refused to do so voluntarily.

The recall includes 135,000 Ford F-150 pickups in the United States and 9,000 in Canada.
