The House of Representatives is expected to vote this week on a proposal to prohibit the Treasury Department from hiring an auto ‘czar’. The measure is part of a larger bill sponsored by Republican Congressman Steve Scalise of Louisiana that would eliminate funding for nine ‘czars’ employed by the White House and other agencies. The bill is co-sponsored by 39 other lawmakers.

“The dramatic increase in czars by this administration is a dangerous and growing trend, and my amendment to start defunding President Obama’s czars will fully reverse this reckless practice,” Scalise said in a statement. “It’s time we start sacking these czars.”

The Obama administration, which does not officially use that title, has defended its use of ‘czars’, and has noted that other administrations, even that of Dubya, have had similar positions.
