Volkswagen U.S. CEO says Scirocco, Phaeton may return to U.S.
As part of its goal to triple deliveries in the US market, Volkswagen AG may bring back the Scirocco coupe. “We will be looking for opportunities” to bring the Scirocco to the U.S., Jonathan Browning, VW’s U.S. chief, said today in an interview in Washington. “From my view, as soon as possible.”
The Scirocco had a cult following in the US during the 1970s and 1980s, and was featured in many TV shows and movies of the period. This comes after the company introduced its first model built specifically for the US, a redesigned, larger Passat. The company aims to sell 1 million units in the US by 2018, in hopes to close the gap between itself, and Toyota and GM.
The Passat will be built in a new factory to be opened in Chattanooga, Tenn., by April, with deliveries of the $20,000 vehicle starting in the third quarter.
