2011 Porsche 911 Black Edition

As part of its plan to double global sales to 200,000 units by 2018, Porsche is considering adding an entry-level sports car to its lineup. The new offering – a four cylinder sports car – would be in addition to the small SUV and plug-in hybrid already approved for production lines.

CEO Matthias Mueller says a new product strategy will be out by the end of March, and will include a boost in production. “We have a good opportunity to get new products to increase volume and revenue,” he said this month at the Detroit auto show. “We are analyzing our chances in different segments.”

Porsche has not released an official total of units moved last year, but says that it is around 95,000 vehicles. VW CEO Martin Winterkorn set a global sales target of 150,000 for Porsche by 2018, and Mueller says that with the new product line set to role out, Porsche can well exceed that.

2018 is much far away. The growth in auto industry might even alone take the sales of present models to 2 lacs. This newer entry level Porsche is I guess going to be a milestone in for this brand, if properly executed.

Porsche has to market the new entry level sports car carefully. If not done well the perception of owners buying the ‘cheap Porsche’ and may end up not selling well at all. The Boxster was considered the poor mans 911 for some time but Porsche was able to give the Boxster excellent suspension and driving feel which justified it as a solid Porsche. If the new entry level Porsche does not do the same within its segment, it will not sell well AND Porsche will not meet its future sales estimates.
